Reduced Airfare?
Okay, I know about Kayak, but Kayak isn’t giving us anything reasonable….My mom wanted to come out this Summer, but late August is already up above US$1000 for PHL -> LHR. Then, she looked for September/October, and it’s still over US$800. I just checked December, and the cheapest I can find is US$850. Last December we found a flight for I think it was US$700something, and that was with US Air.
*sigh*
I’ve even checked BWI and IAD for departures and Birmingham and Manchester for arrivals. This sucks.
Anyone know any other sites I should be checking or ways we can get a super good deal?

try going directly to the airlines.
kayak is supposed to go directly to the airlines when it does it’s searches as well as the other travel sites.
You’re also dealing with increased fuel prices compared to last year as a basis for increased airfare currently. That’s a big part of the issue. You may also want to wait a little while and check again. Prices do not just go up…they will fluctuate down again. I know for domestic flights, the cheapest rates are usually about 3-4 weeks prior to departure. I would presume something of the same holds true for international — not the 3-4 week time frame, but that there is an optimal purchase time for the lowest prices.
I don’t know if there is a time frame that works for int’l travel, but the biggest problem is that if we check for flights 3-4 weeks in advance and they are cheaper, Mom would still have to get the time off from work for it. I don’t know if her employer would appreciate her walking in and saying “I need three weeks off in three weeks”, know what I mean?
Just tried checking for 4 weeks from now and flights are just as expensive and in the US$900-1200 range. 🙁
Iceland Express is running a sale right now until June 4th from EWR-LGW for £299 round trip, with tax. You have to stop in Iceland and it’s a very no-frills airline but you can’t beat that. It’s good for all kinds of dates in the summer and it doesn’t matter if it originates in the US or UK but you have to book in GBP. The USD fares are twice as much.
Wouldn’t work for my mom, unfortunately. Newark is not close enough for her to get a lift with friends/family, and putting her on a train with 3 transfers isn’t possible. But what is the URL for it so we can at least look at it?
Flights are not £299. Total cost is £550. Which is US$908 at today’s exchange rate, which is actually more than they charge if you run the search in US funds (total $849)
